De mijlpaal werd bereikt met de ratificatie van het verdrag door Soedan op 17 maart. Dit internationaal verdrag verplicht regeringen om doeltreffende maatregelen te treffen om dwangarbeid te voorkomen, de slachtoffers ervan te beschermen en hun toegang tot justitie en rechtsmiddelen, waaronder schadevergoeding, te waarborgen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hebben een belangrijke mijlpaal bereikt&#8221;, zegt Guy Ryder, directeur-generaal van de Internationale Arbeidsorganisatie. &#8220;Een toekomst van werk zonder dwangarbeid, mensenhandel, kinderarbeid en moderne slavernij is een toekomst die we samen vorm moeten geven. Implementatie is van vitaal belang om het leven van mensen ten goede te laten veranderen. Dit vereist een wereldwijde en gezamenlijke inspanning, ook van de particuliere sector. &#8220;Alle bedrijven hebben een duidelijke en actieve inzet nodig om dwangarbeid uit te roeien&#8221;, zegt Roberto Suarez-Santos, secretaris-generaal van de IOE.<\/p>\n<p>De ILO heeft samen met de Internationale Organisatie van Werkgevers (IOE) en het Internationaal Verbond van Vakverenigingen (ITUC) de <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ilo50ffcampaign\">50 for freedom campaign<\/a> gelanceerd om regeringen aan te moedigen het protocol te ratificeren en het bewustzijn over het bestaan van moderne slavernij te vergroten.<\/p>\n<p>Dwangarbeid treft alle bevolkingsgroepen, elke regio van de wereld en elke economische<br \/>\nsector. Volgens de\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/topics\/forced-labour\/statistics\/lang--en\/index.htm\">meest recente wereldwijde schattingen\u00a0<\/a>, zijn er nog steeds 25 miljoen mannen, vrouwen en kinderen die vastzitten in dwangarbeid \u2013 verhandeld, vastgehouden in schuldbinding of werkend onder slavernij-achtige omstandigheden. Dat aantal is toegenomen als gevolg van de COVID-19-pandemie die de meest kwetsbare werknemers treft, van wie de meesten geen toegang hebben tot sociale bescherming.<\/p>\n<p>Suriname behoort tot de groep van 50 landen die het verdrag heeft geratificeerd. Het land heeft de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/dyn\/normlex\/en\/f?p=NORMLEXPUB:12100:0::NO:12100:P12100_INSTRUMENT_ID:312174:NO\">Forced Labour Convention, 1930 (No.\u00a029)<\/a> op 15 juni 1975 geratificeerd gevolgd door de ratificatie van het protocol in kwestie, op 3 juni 2019. Intussen heeft Suriname 33 conventies en 1 protocol van de ILO geratificeerd, waarvan 2 conventies niet van kracht zijn.
