RUBiS Suriname has recently donated usd 1000 to a local animal shelter “Help Save Animals Suriname” which is located at the Sir Winston Churchillweg nr 457 (approximately 5 minutes from the RUBiS Terminal). The handover was done by 2 RUBiS employees: Whitney Soepar-Karsoredjo (Operations Assistant) and Fazio Tjokrojoso (Plant Attendant).

Help Save Animals Suriname (HSAS) has opened its doors on February 21st, 2023. The shelter has been built and funded by Mrs Isabella de Boer-Buurman. Isabella, who is from Dutch origin, moved to Suriname in 1997 and started a very successful business with her family. During the years she has lived in Suriname it was very difficult for her to witness all the stray animals roaming around in the neighborhood and the never- ending animal abuse and neglect of dogs and cats. She decided to build an animal shelter to help those animals in need by providing a temporary home, medical assistance, and search for a permanent home with a good owner. All activities from HSAS can be seen on their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/stgsaveanimalssu/

Isabella asked our Country Representative Angelique Tjang-A-Sjin the question why an international oil company would be interested in donating to an animal shelter. This was Angelique’s response:

“At our Terminal at the Putcherweg 45 we know firsthand about stray dogs: there a currently 4 living on our premises. As a respectable company, ignoring the dogs, letting them starve or dumping them somewhere else is not an option, so we feed and deworm them on a regular basis. The dogs keep to themselves during the day and at night they are very alert and accompany the security guards on their rounds. We don’t think of them as a nuisance and let them be. I personally wish that all companies (and there a lot of companies along the Sir Winston Churchillweg) who have stray dogs living on their property will treat them with dignity and respect and not let them starve to death. I guarantee that in return, one will get a very loyal companion who might alert the security guards of a potential danger or burglary.

RUBiS Suriname applauds Isabella’s determination to make a difference and by giving this donation, we hope to do our humble part in supporting her cause.

Last week the whole world was ecstatic and jumping for joy when 4 children who had been lost in the Colombian jungle were found after 40 days by a rescue dog called Wilson. Why not rescue or adopt a dog yourself for a change? Everybody can do this by contacting HSAS for more information or donating to the cause.”
